Tire training

Tire training has been frequently used by expeditioners. It is a good way to work up strength without the risk of over stressing the body. This also relates to dogs.

There are several benefits of using tires while training a dog team. As mushing requires a lot of time on the trail in order to be able to compete, finding creative ways to train can be beneficial for both humans and four-legged. Marit Beate uses this method frequently with her dogs.

"It helps so I don't have to constantly be on the brakes. It also give a smoother braking. In addition the dogs get some extra resistant uphill, without making the sled too heavy. Adding weight in the actual sled can sometimes make it hard to maneuver."

There are many ways of training with tires and most musher have their own personal set-up. 

"I attach my tire about 30 cm behind, using a hook which will give in if the resistance is too high. Normally I won't even feel that the wheel is there, as it follows the sled and movements well, even on curvy trails. An extra bonus of tire training is that it also evens out the trail!"
