Follow Team Vikings Journey

Dog Mushing

Creating an Athlete

Born July 2021, Berserk Kennel welcomed five new additions to the team this summer.

Named after viking warriors and rulers, these puppies will  follow in their parents footsteps and if they want to, become competing sled dogs, perhaps in Iditarod 2025?

In this new concept we will follow these youngsters on their way to adulthood. We look closer on their nutritional needs, feed plans and training regimen. Anything these puppies might need to reach their full potential.

Learn more about the five young superstars below.

HUSKY FACTS

Did you  know?

SIZE OF A PUPPY: Normal birth weight for a medium sized breed like huskies usually range between 200g to 300g (0,45-0,66 punds). Over the next 48-72 hours, the puppy should have a steady increase in weight and usually it will be the double by day 10. With an average increase of 5-10% body weight each day.

SIZE OF AN ADULT: Males get up to 20-30kg (45-60 pounds) and have a height at the shoulder of 53-60 cm (21-23.5 inches), while females are a little smaller at 16-23kg (35-50 pounds) and 51-56 cm (20-22 inches).

CHARACTERISTICS & TEMPERAMENT: This is an intelligent and loyal breed which also has an independent streak. Huskies are rather free-spirited, but are typically good-natured with both adults and children. They are athletic, playful, and light on their feet and somehow they always manage to escape (if something catches their interest).

TRAINING: Like other breeds, huskies benefit from early socialisation with other dogs and humans. Huskies are not easy to train and will normally challenge first-time dog owners. The reason for this is in their breed history. Huskies are bred to pull sleds in harnesses over long distances. They were bred for endurance and their amazing athletic abilities. As stated above huskies are intellectual and loyal, meaning they are not impossible to train, just headstrong.

ENERGY LEVEL: Huskies have an extreme urge to run, and run fast! When bringing a puppy home be prepared to have a spare couch on hand. You will never get bored with one of these rockets in the house (or kennel).

The mother

Mercedes

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?

Born with natural eyeliner, Mercedes is a beautiful dog, much used by the media. However she's got more than just the looks. She is a big dog with an enormous power and drive. Mercedes is a hard one to control as she has this extreme push force in harness.

Mercedes is a fantastic leader for speed. When she's in lead she might even go so fast that the once in the back doesn't manage to keep up. She's the perfect sled dog. Good paws, great fur, good eater and easy keeper.

In addition she's got great personality. Speedy Gonsalez outside, but calm, friendly and amazing around kids inside. Perhaps because she loved the couch so much.

Mercedes was on the winning team during Femundløpet and Finnmarksløpet in 2019 and during Iditarod 2020.

The father

Atilla

Atilla is a leader in all areas of life. He has the alpha behaviour, hard core and a unique, calm – but powerful attitude. He never backs off if someone threatens his position – thereby his alias: Scarface.

He is a huge male with a perfect gate. With his primitive qualities he’s the perfect specimen of the type of sled dog Thomas likes. With care, rest and proper feeding he will never run out of fuel or show any form of weakness.

“With Atilla in your team you’re under constant testing. If he doesn’t like you, you will reveal it – in all sorts of creative ways.” Thomas laughs.

Thomas and Atilla has an extreme bond. Atilla is now 9 years old. He’s been on the main team, traveling thousands of miles with Thomas until 2018. He is still an important dog for the kennel, not only for breeding, but also for socialising the younger dogs – showing them how to be a premium sled dog.
